THAT OUR ROADS MAY BE SAFE: URGENT CALL ON THE ABIA STATE GOVERNMENT:

• TO IMMEDIATELY REPAIR THE OHAFIA TO UMUAHIA ROAD THROUGH BENDE.

I have just learnt of the ghastly accident along OHAFIA to Umuahia road through Bende which killed all the occupants of a VW Passat Car.

While it is safe to blame the driver for reckless driving for the immediate cause of the accident, I am equally blaming the Abia State Government, the Federal Government of Nigeria on this sad loss of the lives of our people, OHAFIA lives.

For almost 50 years since after the civil war when the road was made more motorable, the OHAFIA to Umuahia road through Bende has been neglected especially by the Abia State Government.

Most of the time the State Government claim that the road is a Federal Government road. Though true, BUT who ply the road and who is dead now and are killed or injured when there is an accident like this one? Are they not citizens of ABIA State and my relations?

I know of others States in Nigeria where the State Government will undertake to renovate or construct the road even if it is Federal Road and get reimbursed by the Federal Government.

In ENUGU State, the State Government under Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi renovated the Federal Government road from Opi Junction to Obolo Afor, a trunk ‘A’ road and it is clearly written on a sign post that THIS IS A FEDERAL ROAD RENOVATED BY ENUGU STATE GOVERNMENT.

In ANAMBRA State, all LGAs are linked by newly tarred roads built by former Governor Peter Obi or the present Governor OBIANO. Our close neighbor, EBONYI State tarred all roads leading to villages in the State including Ohafia’s closest neighbors in Edda.

I call on the Abia State Government to as a matter of urgency repair the Ohafia to UMUAHIA road through Bende because it has been a death trap for so long. Many people have been unnecessarily killed due to the bad state of the road. Enough of the blaming and passing of the bulk that it is a Federal road while our people are dying on that road.

The Government in UMUAHIA which claims it has friendly relationship with the central Government in Abuja should use the new found love and construct Federal roads in Abia, then get reimbursed by the Federal Government. It is Abians who are dying on the roads and any responsible Government should care when it’s citizens are being killed on roads that are mere death traps.
