Mazi Chibuike Jonas, a former Arochukwu Local Government Area Chairman and contender in the last Abia State governorship election, expressed his deep condolences over the loss of Chief Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, the pioneer governor of Abia State. He noted that Dr Onu’s wealth of experience and intelligence were needed now more than ever to chart a new course for Nigeria under the present administration.

Mazi Jonas, who is a Consultant/Aide to the office of the Deputy Speaker, Federal House of Representatives on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), asserted that Dr Onu’s contribution to the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and ensuring its victory in the 2015 general elections is widely acknowledged. Throughout his career, Dr Onu’s charm and dedication to community relations made him a formidable political force. He was always humble and never ceased to captivate others with his ideas.

Dr Ogbonnaya Onu was a former lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt who made a significant impact on national politics during the scuttled transition to civilian rule of former president Ibrahim Babangida from 1991 to 1993. Even when he served as Minister of Science and Technology under former President Mohammedu Buhari, his transformation of the sector was a milestone.

My heartfelt condolences go to the administration of Ebonyi State, the people of Ebonyi State, the Southeast region, and all Nigerians, and most importantly, the bereaved family, for their irreparable loss during these trying times. Dr Onu left an indelible mark on history as a leader, and as a parent, he raised a devout family to carry on his legacy. His moral principles will live on.
