The recent removal of Mrs Julie Okah-Donli as director-general of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), as announced by Garba Shehu has been interpreted as continuous show of inability to follow due process on the part of the APC-Led administration as they have flaunted the usual “who cares attitude” in violation of the law establishing the agency.
In a Statement issued by the South East Coordinator of RESET Nigeria Group, Chief Dr Emeka Kalu, he stated that aside from the systematic override of anything that represent Federal Character in the Nigeria polity, the administration has also chosen to employ “fire and hire” as a means of getting back at people with dissent voices as well as compensation for loyalist, this is a tradition that must be condemned intoto as it has so far marred rather than make Nigeria, progress-wise.
Buttressing his position, Chief Kalu said that until her removal, Mrs Julie Okah-Donli has proven capabilities in handling the office as her policies and reforms has so far changed the narratives for Nigerians and Nigeria before the international community where our image has been redeemed and our dignity rebuilt. Therefore sacking Mrs Julie Okah-Donli will mean that Nigeria cannot consolidate the progress she has so far made while handling the department, this has been one of the clogs in the wheel of our progress as a nation, inconsistency.
“We are still emphasizing on the reality that only enthronement of merit in the system can salvage the nation and not celebration of mediocre or culture of “who do you know?”, as this has proven to be an evil rain that beats no good.
“For Nigeria to possibly work, we must Reset her to the path of meritocracy where public office will not be a booty to compensate cronies or a means to settle personal or political differences as this will in no way help Nigeria to progress.
“To tell you how abnormal this sack and hire brouhaha is, the Presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, on Tuesday announced the appointment of Mrs Sulaiman-Ibrahim saying until her appointment she was a special adviser on strategic communication to the minister of state for education. Mr Shehu added that the new NAPTIP boss holds a Bachelor’s degree in sociology and two masters degrees in arts management and business administration respectively. She hails from Nasarawa State in North-Central Nigeria. But he completely avoided to mention why Mrs Julie Okah-Donli was suddenly removed even when she has not served up to 4 years, and had successfully spearheaded the reformation that had so far been witnessed in PAPTIP” he countered.
Chief Kalu also said that It speaks volumes that the spokesman to Abubakar Malami, the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Umar Gwandu, declined comments when contacted on the violation of NAPTIP Act by the President. Its goes to show that this was a well orchestrated violation targeted at teaching Mrs Julie Okah-Donli that only those loyal to Buhari and annointed likewise can get appointed at wills and caprices of state actors, not actually those that merit it.
The prove of impunity in this anomaly also saw the spokesperson of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Halima Oyelade, declining to comment even as the humanitarian affairs ministry directly oversees NAPTIP.
