A Great Lesson On UNITY from DPO Rabiu Garba in Onitsha, a Muslim Police Officer whose professional conduct and good Policing saved his life and that of his men. It is not about tribe, there are good men everywhere whose examples can make Nigeria work.

This exceptional officer is the DPO at Fegge Onitsha in Anambra State, but his untribalistic disposition saved the day and sets precedence that is worthy of emulation and rewards by the authorities.

1. He built a borehole for the neighborhood without any fund raising.

2. He organises soccer tournament for the youths of Fegge at their football pitch where he also goes to play table tennis weekly.

3. For this DPO, Fegge is his home and community despite the fact that he was never an Igbo man.

4. This DPO has attended almost every church and other events within the community as he was invited because he is accepted as one of them.

In the that of the destruction that escalated from the peaceful protest, when the rampaging youths stormed his station yesterday, he neither fought nor fled.

While his men were all panicking, he boldly walked out to meet the mob with the courage of a man who had nothing to fear.

Some of the youths recognized him and silenced others. Most of the youths could vouch for him as a professional cop and a role model for many young men in Fegge community. They even granted him audience to address all the angry youths and he counselled them in few minutes which made all the angry youths disperse.

It had nothing to do with his Tribe.
It had nothing to do with Religion.
He saw being a role model is all he needed to do his job.

He is an Hausa, Muslim police officer in Igbo land serving his nation professionally as a cop without ethnic sentiments. Let’s learn from his kind as Nigerians. Government should reward his likes as yardstick for police reform.
