An Awka lawyer, Francis Moneke, has dragged the Anambra State Government, the state’s Attorney General, and the Commissioner for Police to court for blockage of Zik’s Avenue Road and Amawbia road in Awka, the state capital.

Newsmen gathered that in the wake of the security challenges, security men mounted roadblocks between Ifenna Filling Station and Amawbia roundabout axis on the ever-busy Zik’s Avenue and at Amawbia – Nibo road, by the gate of governor’s lodge.

In the suit before the Anambra State High Court, Awka, Moneke alleged that the road roadblocks mounted by or in line with the order from the state government and the police had caused him untold hardships and pains on different occasions.

According to him, the road blockage amounts to gross violation of his rights to freedom of movement as guaranteed under section 41(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Article 12(1) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Ratification & Enforcement) Act, Cap. A9, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

He prayed the court to order the Respondents to forthwith remove or direct to be removed, every roadblock in the areas and other roads in Anambra state.

He also prayed for an order restraining the respondents from partially or totally closing any road in the state and for respondents, jointly or severally, to pay him N10million for unlawful restriction of his movement and wanton violation of his fundamental rights to freedom of movement, as are guaranteed in the Constitution.
