The Senator representing Ebonyi Central District, Senator Obinna Ogba, on Wednesday, declared that crises going on in the southeastern part of Nigeria was meant to scuttle the 2023 presidential agitation by Igbo people, saying no amount of instigated crises would deprive the zone’s presidential seat.
Senator Ogb, who made the declaration while briefing journalists on motion he sponsored on incessant killings in Ebonyi State at the Senate Plenary on Wednesday, alleged that the rising wave of crises and killings in most of the South Eastern States, are politically motivated and will not stop the agitation of the zone for the Presidential seat of the country in 2023.
“Though there were pockets of crises in some of the States before now, the rising wave of such crises resulting in wanton killings of innocent lives and destruction of property is political.
“Why is it that when agitation for the South East to have a taste of the Presidency in 2023 is gaining momentum, that the senseless killings got intensified?”, he asked.
The Senator had earlier in his motion on incessant killings in Ebonyi State, expressed concern on the degenerating state of insecurity in the country.
According to him, one of such instances was the mayhem unleashed on people in Obeagu, Egedegede and Nkalaha communities in Ishielu Local Government of Ebonyi State by suspected herdsmen on Tuesday, March 30, 2021.
This, he added, was different from the communal crisis which erupted between Ezza – Effium and Effium people in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the State since January 2021.
He also cited the ugly incidence of three Policemen who were shot dead at a checkpoint in Onuebonyi/Nwezenyi road , Abakaliki, and their rifles taken away on Wednesday, April 14, 2021.
He accordingly declared that there was the urgent need for intervention by the Federal Government to arrest the senseless killings, destruction of properties and other vices , in order to save people from untold hardships.
Consequently, the Senate in adopting prayers of the motion, urged the Nigeria Police and other relevant security agencies to carry out a comprehensive investigation of the attacks and killings.
It also urged the Federal Government to put appropriate measures in place to forestall further attacks just as it mandated the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to provide enough relief materials to all victims of the attacks and crises.
