Hon. Michael Chiaka Kwazemam Nwachukwu is one of the shining political lights in Owerri zone.  He is a man of many parts, an ex banker who attained commanding heights in the nation’s financial sector, a community leader, a politician, and one who has demonstrated an uncommon passion to serve his people.

The undying quest to serve remains one of the propelling factors which prompted Nwachukwu’s passion to join the murky waters of politics.

Born on April 4, 1965 in Egbelu Obube in Owerri North LGA of Imo State, Nwachukwu plunged into the political arena after a flourishing banking career which span across various segments of the banking sector ranging from Operations to Commercial/Retail Banking and Corporate/Investment Banking.

Nwachukwu’s banking career saw him through to Equatorial Trust Bank and then to Fortune International Bank Plc from where he retired from the banking sector in 2002.

His political career began on a soaring note, when he served as State Secretary of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA for six years between 2005- 2011.He later emerged the Director General, Martin Agbaso governorship campaign organization, piloting Agbaso to near victory in the governorship election of the State.  

In 2018, Mike set his sights on Owerri zone senatorial seat.

In his declaration speech on 21^st April, 2018, he said he was driven by the passion to “deploy all the lessons I learned as a student of Political and Behavioural Science as well as draw on my experience as Banker with bias in Relationship Management and Corporate Finance to champion the cause of our people in the National Assembly and Nigerian body politic”

 “I will engage everybody that needs to be engaged, constructively to deliver the goods for my Senatorial Zone, for Imo State and for the South East Zone. I will always REMEMBER WHERE I COME FROM and the import of the responsibility thrust on me by the good people of Imo East (Owerri) Senatorial Zone” he had declared

Nwachukwu’s senatorial ambition was a roller coaster, a moving train, because his aspiration really attracted enormous followership and support in the 106 wards in Owerri senatorial zone which he toured to garner unprecedented support for his aspiration.  

“Despite the electoral flaws which characterized the Owerri zone senatorial polls, Nwachukwu did not opt for litigation against the purported winner of Owerri senatorial zone election, Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, a rare move, which he explained, was aimed at not distracting the Senator from the task of ensuring effective representation for Owerri zone at the Red Chambers”

Men and women of goodwill in the zone identified and gave him overwhelming support.  However, their hopes were dashed when the outcome of the results of the election did not reflect their overwhelming desire after they had massively voted for his candidature.

The outcome of the 2019 Owerri zone senatorial election reinforced clarion calls on the nation’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to re asses the electoral process to make it credible as a way of ensuring that the choice of the people during elections reflect in the results.

Despite the electoral flaws which characterized the Owerri zone senatorial polls, Nwachukwu did not opt for litigation against the purported winner of Owerri senatorial zone election, Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, a rare move, which he explained, was aimed at not distracting the Senator from the task of ensuring effective representation for Owerri zone at the Red Chambers.

Nwachukwu later went on to join the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC after a deafening call on him to do so by his political foot-soldiers, loyalists, stakeholders and leaders. Political observers argue that since he joined the APC, he has become a recurring decimal in the political dynamics of Owerri Zone.

Political observers of the political dynamics in Owerri zone contend that Nwachukwu’s entrance into the APC marks a turning point for the Party because of his overwhelming acceptance across the nooks and crannies of the zone.With less than three years to the next polls, Nwachukwu has already emerged as a rallying point, an emerging political star for the people of the Zone to follow.

Testimonies abound of his towering political profile as attested by leaders and top level political players in Owerri zone. A political leader in the zone, Chief Lemmy Akakem, described Mike Nwachukwu as a man of fine character.

“Mike Nwachukwu is a man of fine character. A good man with integrity who has excelled in various fields of endeavour” Akakem had said.

Such accolades have continued to stream in for Nwachukwu as he continues his political forays.
