Two children died on Friday in their school bus in Aguda, Surulere, Lagos.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the command spokesman, revealed on Saturday that “one of the victims is an eight-year-old boy. We still have to get the details of the other.”

Explaining how it happened, Mr. Hundeyin said on Twitter that “a school bus driver ignored repeated complaints from children he was driving home that they weren’t feeling well.”

He added that some of the children were unconscious, while two eventually died.

He also said that the yet-to-be-identified driver has been arrested by police while the “relevant regulatory agency has been notified of this act of gross negligence.”

Mr. Hundeyin urged private school owners to pay particular attention to their hiring process.

“Parents should also do extensive background checks on schools and daycare centers before entrusting them with the care of their children,” he added.

Hundeyin told newsmen that while an autopsy has not been performed, “everything so far points in the direction of suffocation.”

He said school buses must have a first aid kit in case of an emergency and a Health, Safety, and Environment officer.

“The duty of that officer is to give lessons to the staff of that organization on what to do in case of an emergency. What to do in case of fire, building collapse, flood, invasion,” he said.

“They are also responsible for plotting the assembly points. If they had an HSE officer, they would have shown the driver the number to call and the steps to take in case of an emergency.”
