Ambassador Dr Olugu Ukpai, the CEO and Co-Founder of Challenge AIDS and Malaria in Africa (CHAMA) in May 2024 received a loud ovation at Canada’s top-most legislative chamber. The Senator representing Halifax at Canada’s Federal Legislative Red Chamber, eloquently recognized the unwavering malaria advocacy of Dr Olugu Ukpai and the entire global Malaria Warriors and saluted their commitment to ending malaria.
Below are excerpts from Mr Speaker’s statement on Dr Olugu Ukpai on the floors of the Red Chamber:
“April marks World Malaria Month.
Malaria continues to cause ravages all around the world and, unfortunately, our country is not spared. Indeed, malaria still claims nearly 500 Canadian lives each year.
When tragedy strikes, some individuals transform hardships into advocacy. This is exemplified by one of my constituents, Olugu Ukpai, who is on a mission to end malaria after losing his 16-month-old daughter, Goodness Olugu Ukpai to the disease.
Olugu Ukpai plays a pivotal role in raising awareness about malaria, using drumming demonstrations to engage the public on this pressing issue. He will lead the commemoration of World Malaria Day on April 16 in Halifax, featuring special guests and drummers from various parts of the African continent. Artists and community members will be coming together to support the cause and engage Halifax in this crucial battle.
Awareness of malaria is increasing, and we need to maintain this momentum. I want to extend my gratitude to Olugu Ukpai for his unwavering dedication.
