In a heartwarming initiative, over 100 indigent individuals in Izzi Local Government Area (LGA) of Ebonyi received a gift of health on Saturday through a comprehensive screening and medical checkup program. The altruistic endeavor, orchestrated by the Better Health for Rural Women, Children, and Internally Displaced Foundation (BERWO), a charitable project initiated by the compassionate Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, wife of Ebonyi’s Governor, took place at the Oferekpe Agbaja Primary School.
This impactful event was made possible through a collaborative effort with prestigious partners, including the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (AE-FUTHA), World Health Organization (WHO), and the United Nations Children’s Fund.
Speaking passionately at the occasion, Mrs. Nwifuru, the founder of BERWO, expressed her unwavering commitment to offering free healthcare to the underprivileged citizens of the state. She emphasized that the intervention resonates with the true spirit of the Christmas season, aligning with the core mission of her pet project to enhance healthcare accessibility for the rural population.
Prof. Robinson Onoh, the chief medical director of AE-FUTHA, highlighted the strategic design of the exercise, ensuring the fulfillment of the governor’s wife’s vision for basic healthcare delivery at the grassroots level. The medical team, led by Prof. Onoh, offered a spectrum of services, including eye and dental screenings, general body examinations, paediatric care, and surgical consultations. Notably, this healthcare outreach will extend its reach to all 13 LGAs of the state.
Vivian Ibeako, the state coordinator of WHO, affirmed the commitment to directing individuals to appropriate medical care while also providing necessary support. Comfort Nweke, the zonal coordinator of the Association of Micro Credit Institution of Nigeria, commended Mrs. Nwifuru’s dedicated efforts and pledged ongoing support for her initiatives.
Sylvester Nwibo and Nwaka Nwebonyi, two grateful beneficiaries, extended their heartfelt thanks to the governor’s wife for the invaluable healthcare initiative, fervently urging its sustained continuation. As BERWO’s healing touch reverberates through Izzi LGA, it stands as a testament to the transformative power of compassion and community-focused healthcare initiatives during this festive season.
