Malnutrition and disease means COVID-19 could be more deadly in Africa than elsewhere in the world.
Health systems in Africa have limited capacity to absorb the pandemic.
The strategic approach should focus on containment and aggressive preventive measures.
Addressing a press conference, Geng said a video conference held Wednesday between experts and officials from China and African countries on containing the COVID-19 epidemic has achieved good results.
Nearly 300 officials and experts from 24 African countries and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention attended the conference, said Geng, adding that during the three and a half hours, Chinese experts detailed the traits and trends of the coronavirus epidemic, shared China’s experience in epidemic containment and clinic treatment and answered nearly 50 questions from the African side.
Geng said the African side spoke highly of China’s progress in fighting against the coronavirus epidemic and China’s significant contributions to safeguarding global public health security.
The African side stressed that China’s actions provide valuable experience and have built a model for African countries to contain the coronavirus epidemic, he added.
“While continuing our fight against the disease at home, China will unreservedly share our experience to contain the epidemic with the African side and continue offering as much help as possible based on African countries’ needs to commonly safeguard regional and global public health security,” Geng said.
Today, Africa, one part of more general Africa–China relations, began in the 7th century and continue through the present day. Nowadays, China seeks resources for its growing consumption, and African countries seek funds to develop their infrastructures.
Over a third of China’s oil comes from Africa, as does 20% of the country’s cotton. Africa has roughly half of the world’s stock of manganese, an essential ingredient for steel production, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo on its own possesses half of the planet’s cobalt.
While relations are mainly conducted through diplomacy and trade, military support via the provision of arms and other equipment is also a major component.
In the diplomatic and economic rush into Africa, the United States, France, and the UK are China’s main competitors. China surpassed the US in 2009 to become the largest trading partner of Africa. Bilateral trade agreements have been signed between China and 40 countries of the continent. In 2000, China Africa Trade amounted to $10 billion and by 2014, it had grown to $220 billion.
With the worst of the coronavirus behind it now, China has been ramping up its international assistance to other countries so they can also contain the virus. It has been stepping up to support African countries, especially now, as the United States and Europe concentrate on their own massive outbreaks.
BEIJING, (Xinhua) — China stands ready to actively support and help African countries and regional organizations in fighting the COVID-19 epidemic and jointly safeguarding global public health security, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said Thursday March 19. 2020.
Geng said the African side spoke highly of China’s progress in fighting against the coronavirus epidemic and China’s significant contributions to safeguarding global public health security.
Come to think of it. When Africa started recording cases of Covid-19, over 500 ventilators and 200,000 personal protective equipment each was donated by China to Ethiopia, Ghana and Nigeria to be distributed to African countries. It was the second massive donation to be made by the billionaire Chinese tech founder Jack Ma. In March, he donated over 1 million test kits and 600,000 masks to Africa.
From Algeria to Zimbabwe, both Chinese government support and Chinese companies operating on the continent, mobilized by their embassies, have embarked on a donation blitz of cash, PPE and testing kits.
I will not stop there,
Almost everything we use in Africa is from China and they have been there for us than other countries who have been milking our oils in the name of helping us. All the recent Loans, gadgets, Electronics, Automobiles, Technology Equipments, Medical kits, military kits, etc we use here are all from China
America will always give us condition just like they did during our ethic and civil war before we can have such relationship with them.
China has made clear it wants to help but even in Africa where it has cultivated deep ties, that help is viewed suspiciously and in some cases even unwelcome.
Now my question is can Africa survive this without an international help?, The Politicians who want to use covid-19 to play politics and make more money are they helping us or working against our health?.
The Americans who because of their Trade war with China, sponsor us to make different kind of videos, news and write-ups forcing Africans not to accept anything from china, are they ready to help us?.
The last time I checked The few times America claimed to have helped African countries, they made a way with a lot of our mineral resources and never did anything for us not even free loan for development.
Now we are busy as Africa citizens saying all sort of things against China.
Do you all think we can fight this alone?
Don’t you think this might cause more damage in our future relationship with China if we go back to them in need for help?
Can we stand to produce and develop our self by listening to those selfish politicians and other international bodies, who don’t even think about the wellbeing of the citizens before passing a bill in the Parliamentary.
I wish someone can directly answer my questions?
I wish we could grow wiser and stop fighting those that are helping us.
Africans should stop this war against China and stop sending hate speech and videos to us on social media.
I remain. Arua Goodluck
