Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari has passed away at the age of 82 in a London clinic, where he had been receiving medical treatment. The news was confirmed by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, and former aide, Bashir Ahmad, on Sunday, July 13, 2025.

Buhari’s death marks the end of an era in Nigerian politics, with the former president leaving behind a complex legacy. During his tenure, he focused on anti-corruption measures, security reforms, and economic diversification. Supporters hail him as a symbol of principled leadership, while critics argue that his administration failed to deliver transformative change.
Tributes have begun pouring in from local and international figures, including President Bola Tinubu, who described Buhari as “a patriot who gave his all to Nigeria”. Funeral arrangements and official state honors are expected to be announced by the Presidency in due course, with Buhari likely to be buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
Buhari served as Nigeria’s military head of state from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. His presidency was marked by significant policy initiatives, including anti-corruption drives and security reforms.
