Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the most prominent Igbo socio-cultural organisation, has warned the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) not to hold any kind of demonstration in Igbo territory.
It will be recalled that the NLC had planned nationwide demonstrations against the hardships facing the nation on February 27 and 28.
However, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, the national president of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, stated in a statement made available to journalists on Monday that the NLC protest will not take place in any part of Igbo land.
Ndigbo, according to Okwu, had been subjected to a number of unfair treatment in Nigeria. He bemoaned the fact that no region had ever stepped up to save the people.
“The Ndigbo were treated like pieces of garbage under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, but no other region raised a voice even in sympathy with us,” he stated.
For eight years, Buhari’s security council was devoid of any Igbo men, yet the nation as a whole ignored this and carried on as if nothing had changed.
“The South-East has the fewest ministers, even under the current administration, and no one has ever found anything wrong with that.
Due to some of the decisions they took, the Ndigbo were also targeted during the most recent general elections. Despite being the target of numerous insults and attacks, no one felt moved to stand up for them.
Why therefore would someone want to use any pretext to force Ndigbo to participate in a protest? We strongly object to it and advise anyone considering it to look elsewhere.
“We are happy with Bola Ahmed Tinubu as our president, and we will continue to support him,” Okwu said.
Nonetheless, he made three demands of President Tinubu: the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB who is currently detained; an additional state in the South-East; and an additional ministry position.
The president of Ohanaeze Youths declared, “These are matters of interest to Ndigbo and not any inconsequential protest.”
