Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, visited Daura, Katsina State, to offer his condolences to the family of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari. Obi was spotted at Buhari’s Daura residence on Wednesday, a day after the former President was laid to rest.
Obi had earlier clarified his absence from the burial ceremony, citing logistical challenges and the unavailability of flights to Katsina. He explained that the airport was closed due to the presence of dignitaries and noted that the mourning period extends until Thursday, adding that his visit on Wednesday was still part of the mourning process.

During the visit, Obi signed the condolence register and spent quiet moments with Buhari’s family members, extending his sympathies and offering prayers for the repose of the departed statesman. He recalled an encounter with Buhari during his campaign trail, where Buhari advised him to “care for the poor Nigerians”.
The visit drew reactions online, with former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad publicly appreciating Obi for his gesture, despite their past political differences. Many Nigerians on social media interpreted Obi’s visit as a gesture of maturity and national healing, showcasing leadership and respect across party lines. The visit was seen as a significant gesture of unity and respect, particularly given the political tensions in Nigeria and the sensitivity around Buhari’s death.
