The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the tragic incident of an 80-year-old man allegedly taking his own life in the Imota area of the state.
According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the incident was reported by Mustapha, the landlord of the deceased, to the Imota Police Division around 12:26 a.m. on Friday.
Mustapha recounted that he heard the children of the deceased shouting and rushed to their house on Watchtower Street, Araromi in Imota. There, he discovered the lifeless body of Isiaka Ayinde, hanging from a rope tied to the burglary railing of a kitchen window.
The Imota Division’s DCB personnel visited the scene and documented it with photographs. However, the family of the deceased expressed their wish not to deposit the body in the mortuary but instead preferred immediate burial, citing the deceased’s age and religious beliefs.
The tragic incident highlights the alarming issue of suicide among the elderly population, shedding light on the need for increased awareness and support for mental health services tailored to older individuals.
As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the elderly man’s death, authorities urge the public to be vigilant and offer assistance to those in distress, especially vulnerable members of society like the elderly.
