Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North, proposed a ban on the use of dollars in Nigeria during a recent National Assembly plenary. He believes that excessive reliance on foreign exchange is harming the nation’s economy, with the dollar’s value soaring to nearly N2000, driving up costs. Nwoko emphasized the need to prioritize the naira’s stability in the global market.
However, Nwoko’s suggestion contradicts the lavish displays of dollars by his sixth wife, actress Regina Daniels, on social media. Daniels frequently showcases luxury items purchased in dollars from Nigerian vendors, raising questions about Nwoko’s proposal.
In October 2023, Daniels flaunted her luxurious hair, sourced from a Nigerian vendor who charges in dollars, on her birthday. Additionally, in January 2023, she publicly celebrated receiving a $100,000 credit from Nwoko, expressing gratitude for his generosity.
This conflict intensifies as Daniels has a history of receiving dollar-based gifts. In 2022, she received a dollar money tree from her mother, Rita Daniels, further highlighting the family’s affinity for luxury and dollar transactions.
Nwoko’s call for a dollar ban reflects his concerns over Nigeria’s economic stability. However, his wife’s conspicuous displays of wealth, funded by dollar transactions, illustrate the complexities of implementing such a policy.
