The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Abuja chapter, recently awarded scholarships to seven indigent students of the institution. Sylvanus Ugoh, the chapter’s ASUU chairman, emphasized that the scholarship aims to assist less privileged yet bright students in completing their education and contributing to national and international development. The initiative, an annual event, reflects ASUU’s commitment to impacting lives beyond industrial actions.
During the presentation ceremony, Mr. Ugoh distributed letters and cheques to the beneficiaries, highlighting the rigorous selection process based on applications and multiple screening stages to ensure deserving candidates were selected. While two beneficiaries received N200,000 each from the ASUU national body, the remaining five were awarded N50,000 each by the university chapter.
Mr. Ugoh emphasized the need for collective efforts in supporting financially disadvantaged students, urging other well-meaning Nigerians to join the cause. He reiterated ASUU’s dedication to not only advocating for better educational standards but also making tangible impacts in students’ lives.
Expressing gratitude, the beneficiaries collectively commended both the national and UNIABUJA chapters for the scholarship opportunity. They pledged to utilize the funds judiciously to further their education and contribute positively to society.
The ASUU scholarship initiative serves as a beacon of hope for indigent students, demonstrating the union’s multifaceted approach towards educational empowerment beyond labor disputes. Through collaborative efforts and continued support from stakeholders, such initiatives can significantly alleviate financial barriers and foster academic excellence among deserving students.
