The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal has been accused of firing Labour Party members unfairly in many states around the nation.
According to OHAFIATV News reports, the tribunal invalidated numerous elected party members’ victories in the states of Edo, Abia, and other locales due to inconsistencies involving their party membership and method of nomination.
In a statement released by its National Chairman, Barr. Julius Abure, the party responded to the trend by opining that the problem of
Membership is a party internal matter outside of judicial purview.
He stated, “We are concerned since the basis for overturning our victory are issues that the superior courts have previously resolved.
“It is even absurd and hilarious when various tribunals render disparate and inconsistent rulings on the same issue, an issue that has since been decided by the Supreme Court and most recently at the Presidential Election Petition Court in APC v. Peter Obi.
Numerous times, the courts have ruled that they lack the authority to get involved in a political party’s internal matters.
“The nomination of candidates and membership are party internal matters outside the purview of the courts. Who its members are and who should serve as their candidate for office are decisions that can only be made by a political party.
“The Labour Party Chairman described the rulings as careless and claimed that the judges’ conduct is suspicious.”
He urged the Nigerian Judicial Council to take action by investigating the activities of the attorneys.
Despite the fact that the tribunal is not the highest court, we disapprove of the judicial officials’ carelessness in making a judgment that appears dubious. In order to draw the Nigeria Judicial Council’s attention to the injustice that is taking place and to review the actions of certain of our legal officers who may have been compromised and found wanting in the performance of their duties, we are doing the following.
“Labour Party must be pushed to open up the political landscape and put a stop to the one-party system that the ruling party is adamantly pursuing. Pushing the party under a moving trailer won’t help anyone in the least, Abure continued.
