Members of the Conference of Former Speakers of the Abia State House of Assembly have expressed their satisfaction with Governor Alex Otti’s performance thus far.
They informed the governor that they would stop at nothing to help his government succeed.
The former speakers, who are members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), made the vow on Friday while accompanying Governor Alex Otti to review ongoing road projects in Aba.
During a visit to the governor, certain former Speakers, including Rt. Hon. Stanley Ohajuruka and Rt. Hon. Ude Oko Chukwu, the State’s immediate past Deputy Governor, stated that elections have passed and what is now expected is governance.
Ohajuruka stated that they had witnessed Otti’s good work so far and were impressed, as well as willing to give advise and collaboration to improve governance in Abia State.
“As essential players in Abia, we want to guarantee you that we will use our extensive knowledge to help you.
“Elections have passed, and now what is anticipated is governance. We will provide advise, cooperation, and support as needed to ensure Abians reap the benefits of democracy,” he stated.
Also addressing, Ude Oko Chukwu, the immediate past Deputy Governor and previous Speaker, stated that they appreciated Governor Otti’s efforts in the state and will help him in achieving his goals.
According to Oko Chukwu, “Abia is ours.” It belongs to all of us, and that is why we are pleased with what you are doing. We are here for you in whatever form and role we may play.
“We’re quite impressed. We went out, saw things for ourselves, and witnessed what you have done.”
Governor Otti responded, thanking the group for identifying with him and the work he is doing in the state.
He emphasised that leadership is about service and stewardship, and that he needed to be close to the people while monitoring and keeping contractors on their toes.
However, DAILY POST says that the Friday “endorsement visit” has raised some eyebrows and left tongues spinning among many PDP and APC supporters in Abia State, with some worrying that the chieftains’ visit to Otti could indicate something more.
A leading PDP member from the state who spoke on Saturday recognised that Governor Otti was doing well in office.
He did, however, express amazement that top members of his party were openly ‘following the Governor around Aba streets’.
According to the PDP chieftain, the visit of prominent PDP members to Governor Otti and their open endorsement of him demonstrated that all was not well with the PDP in the state.
However, when reached by DAILY POST for comment, the PDP’s Vice Chairman and acting Publicity Secretary, Abraham Amah, did not respond to a message sent to him on Saturday.
The similar sentiment is circulating within the APC in the state, as key members of the broom party, including former speakers Martins Azubuike and Stanley Ohajuruka, were among those who attended Governor Otti on his inspection trip of Aba before offering their support.
Former speakers Agwu U. Agwu and Arua Arunsi were also among.
