Toheeb Yusuf has been sentenced to one year in Ikoyi Prisons by the Ikeja Special Offences Court for money laundering. However, Justice Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe offered Yusuf the option of 100 hours of community service supervised by correctional center officials.
In addition to the sentence, Yusuf will forfeit his iPhone 13 Pro, Toyota Camry car, and a manager’s cheque of N1 million made out to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) if he fails to comply with the community service requirement.
Yusuf was arrested during a sting operation on September 19, 2023, with an iPhone 13 Pro Max and a gold Toyota Camry. He was found to have concealed and disguised the true nature and ownership of $23,423 obtained through illegal transactions.
In his defense, Yusuf’s counsel emphasized his client’s status as a first-time offender and pleaded for a non-custodial sentence, citing the impact on his family. Yusuf himself asked for mercy from the court, claiming to have turned over a new leaf.
The judge, considering Yusuf’s plea bargain and allocutus, opted for the community service option as an alternative to imprisonment. However, she warned that failure to comply would result in Yusuf serving the remainder of his term in prison.
This verdict reflects the court’s attempt to balance punishment with rehabilitation, acknowledging Yusuf’s potential for reintegration into society while ensuring accountability for his actions as a cybercriminal involved in money laundering.
