In Ibadan, bank customers are experiencing long wait times as they attempt to link their National Identification Number (NIN) to their bank accounts, following the Central Bank of Nigeria’s directive to restrict Tier 1 bank accounts without BVN or NIN by March 1.
Despite the directive, some customers view the process as unnecessary, citing the existing linkage of their Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) to their NIN. Anike Adewoye criticized the move as a duplication of efforts and a waste of time and resources.
Yinka Olanrenwaju shared his frustration after being denied a transaction due to the lack of NIN linkage to his account. He described the process at the bank as cumbersome and inefficient, with long queues and additional documentation requirements.
The situation has led to overcrowding at the NIMC office in Ibadan, where individuals are attempting to obtain their NIN for linking purposes. However, some, like Olaniyi Olawuyi, are hesitant to join the queues at the bank due to the anticipated challenges.
While some banks have implemented self-service guidelines for customers to link their NIN and BVN online, others still require physical presence or interaction with account officers. This discrepancy in approaches contributes to the frustration and inconvenience faced by customers.
Bank officials acknowledge the challenges and suggest alternative means for linking NIN to accounts, such as through account officers or online platforms. However, the lack of uniformity across banks adds complexity to the process and prolongs customer wait times.
