Two men, Hamza Naziru (18) and Mohammed Muritala (22), appeared before the Karu Upper Area Court in Abuja on Thursday, facing charges of stealing security lights. The defendants, who identified themselves as scavengers, were accused of criminal conspiracy, criminal trespass, mischief, and theft but pleaded not guilty.
According to the prosecution counsel, Ayotunde Adeyanju, the case was reported by a retired soldier residing in Karu, Abuja, who alleged that the defendants unlawfully entered his property and removed security lights mounted on his fence. The incident occurred on February 12, leading to the defendants’ arrest after attempting to steal additional lights.
In response to the charges, the judge, Isa Adamu, granted bail to each defendant in the amount of N200,000, with one surety each required to provide a similar sum. The case was adjourned until April 24 for further proceedings.
