The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) successfully rescued a middle-aged woman who attempted suicide by jumping into the Gbodofon River in Osogbo, Osun. The incident unfolded on Tuesday, and the NSCDC’s prompt response averted a tragedy.
Upon receiving a distress call, the NSCDC’s Search and Rescue Team swiftly arrived at the scene, where they found the woman submerged in the river. Acting with efficiency, the officers pulled her to safety within minutes of the distress call.
The NSCDC spokesperson, Adeleke Kehinde, confirmed the successful rescue in a statement, highlighting the responsiveness of the security agency’s personnel. The middle-aged woman was immediately resuscitated on-site and later transported to the hospital for further medical attention.
In her account after regaining consciousness, the woman revealed that she had traveled from Iragbiji to Osogbo with the intention of ending her life by jumping into the Gbodofon River. Disturbingly, she explained that she felt an intense burning sensation in her body, and she believed that jumping into the river was the only way to extinguish this perceived fire.
NSCDC Commandant Agboola Sunday commended the quick and effective response of the agency’s personnel, emphasizing their training in disaster management. He expressed the commitment of the NSCDC to safeguarding lives and property, even during emergency situations.
In light of this incident, Commandant Agboola urged residents to prioritize their mental health. Additionally, he assured the public that the NSCDC would intensify monitoring of rivers across the state to prevent similar suicide attempts.
This successful intervention underscores the importance of well-trained emergency response teams in dealing with critical situations. The NSCDC’s dedication to protecting lives, demonstrated through their rapid and effective action, serves as a testament to the agency’s commitment to public safety. As the NSCDC maintains vigilance over water bodies, their efforts contribute to preventing tragic incidents and promoting mental health awareness in the community.
