The Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU) in Anyigba, Kogi State, is mourning the sudden death of its lecturer, Olabode Abimbola-Ibikunle, which occurred at a hotel in Anyigba under unclear circumstances. The university and the Kogi Police Command have called for calm and urged the public to refrain from speculation as investigations continue.
In a statement issued in Lokoja, PAAU Registrar Yahaya Alilu described the incident as “tragic and disturbing” and called for a thorough probe into the cause and circumstances of the lecturer’s death. The incident reportedly involved a 22-year-old 200-level student, Glory Ojochegbe-Samuel, who was present at the time. The university has firmly dissociated other students, including Miss Bello Yahaya-Lubabat of the Department of Educational Administration and Planning, from the incident, cautioning against spreading unverified claims that could harm innocent individuals.

“We urge the public and media to refrain from speculations or premature conclusions until the facts are fully established,” the registrar stated. “PAAU remains committed to truth, fairness, and justice, and we appeal for restraint and responsible reportage.”
According to the Kogi Police Command spokesperson, William Ovye-Aya, the incident was reported by the hotel manager, Moses Friday, after Glory Ojochegbe-Samuel alerted staff that the lecturer had collapsed following their encounter. Police rushed Mr. Abimbola-Ibikunle to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy is underway to determine the cause of death, and Ovye-Aya assured that further action would be taken based on the investigation’s findings.
The university and police have reiterated their commitment to uncovering the truth as the investigation progresses.
