The Abia State government has been commended for its unwavering support for the growth of Badminton in the nation. Governor Alex Otti, represented by his Deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, made this known during the inauguration of the Main Organizing Committee (MOC) and Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the 1st Abia State Para Badminton International Championship.

The championship, scheduled to hold from September 30th to October 16th, 2025, in Umuahia, will feature top athletes from around the world. Governor Otti, who is also the chairman of the MOC, highlighted the importance of Badminton in producing national athletes, creating safe spaces for youth engagement, and promoting positive lifestyle choices.

The Governor urged the state executives to scout for talent, mentor young players, and collaborate with local clubs to project the state’s athletic excellence. He also charged the Badminton Federation of Nigeria to prioritize grassroots development, organize training programs for coaches, and provide better facilities for young athletes.

The First Lady of Abia State, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, represented by Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Vulnerable Persons, Mrs. Ngozi Felix, assured the athletes of her support and encouraged them to excel in their sporting events.

The President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Mr. Francis Orbih, and the National Coordinator of Para Badminton, Mr. Ekeoma Samuel, thanked Governor Otti and his team for projecting the state positively in the world of sports.

The event was attended by top government officials, including the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba (PhD), Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Mr. Nwaobilor Ananaba, and members of the Badminton/Para Badminton Association of Nigeria.
