Beatrice Ekweremadu, the wife of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has returned to Nigeria after being released from a UK prison.
She was sentenced to six years in prison for her involvement in a plot to harvest a young Nigerian man’s kidney for their daughter, Sonia, who needed a transplant.

Beatrice and her husband were convicted under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act, with Ike receiving a 10-year sentence. The case sparked widespread debate about the ethics of organ donation and the desperation of families dealing with life-threatening illnesses.
Beatrice’s release and return to Nigeria have been met with celebration and relief from her community. Her husband, Ike, remains in prison, serving his sentence.
The family’s ordeal has highlighted the complexities of organ transplantation and the need for greater awareness and support for families navigating these challenging situations.
