Two women, Tessi Ikechukwu and Lauretta Akomen, were arrested by the Delta State Police Command for buying a newborn baby boy for N2 million from a baby factory in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The dramatic arrest occurred when a commercial motorcycle rider overheard the women discussing the transaction and swiftly diverted them to the Ekpan Police Station.
According to the police spokesperson, Bright Edafe, the rider reported that four women had boarded his tricycle, but two alighted at Effurun Roundabout, handing over the baby to the remaining passengers. One of the women mentioned that the balance had been paid and instructed the others to inform her upon arrival at their destination.
Lauretta Akomen, 38, confessed to purchasing the baby from a traditional home in Port Harcourt, where teenage girls are harbored and impregnated to sell their babies to childless individuals.
She also revealed taking drugs to appear pregnant. The police have apprehended the suspects and are searching for accomplices, including an agent named Gloria.
This incident highlights the disturbing reality of baby trafficking in Nigeria. The Rivers State Police Command has previously busted baby factory syndicates, arresting over 10 suspects.
These crimes underscore the need for increased vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies to combat human trafficking.
