The phased demolition of Aba’s iconic Ekeoha market, also known as the Shopping Centre, has commenced, marking the beginning of Abia State’s ambitious remodeling project.
This initiative aims to elevate the market to international standards, ensuring a safer and more conducive trading environment for merchants and customers alike.
Remodeling Objectives:
- Enhanced Safety: Provide a secure environment for traders and customers
- International Standards: Elevate the market’s reputation and appeal
- Business Growth: Foster opportunities for traders and the local economy
Governor Alex Otti has assured original shop owners that they will not lose their businesses during the remodelling exercise. The project, a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), will be executed in phases to minimize disruptions to traders.
However, some traders, led by Chris Uruakpa, have expressed concerns about the project’s delay, taking their grievances to the Aba State High Court. Those affected by the first phase of demolition have appealed for swift reconstruction to enable them to return to business.
Project Highlights:
- State-of-the-Art Facilities: Fiber optic connectivity, electric lifts, and advanced firefighting systems
- Temporary Relocation: Arrangements made for affected traders
- Mortgage Packages: Government support for genuine traders to secure ownership of shops
The remodelling project is part of Governor Otti’s broader urban renewal agenda, focusing on creating a safe, secure, and business-friendly environment in Abia State.
