In a bid to reform Nigeria’s electoral process, Hon. Ibe Okwara Osonwa, a member Representing the good people of Arochukwu Ohafia Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has made a strong case for perfecting electronic voting and conducting all elections in one day before considering diaspora participation.
Speaking to the media after a house meeting on the need to reduce election costs, Hon. Osonwa emphasized that conducting elections in one day would significantly reduce costs, which have been increasing with each election cycle. He argued that there is no practical reason why all elections cannot be held in one day, adding that waiting a little longer for results is a small price to pay for the benefits of a more efficient process.
Hon. Osonwa also stressed the need to perfect electronic voting before considering diaspora participation. He highlighted the importance of getting to a place where Nigeria can conduct perfect and corruption-free electronic voting, citing the challenges of diaspora voting, such as the use of ballot papers and signed seals, which could increase wait times and the likelihood of fraudulent actions.
He emphasized the need for the deployment of technology in the electoral process, from registration to accreditation and transmission of results, to make voting easier, faster, and more secure. Hon. Osonwa’s proposal is a practical approach to enhancing Nigeria’s electoral process, ensuring that elections are free, fair, and credible.
By perfecting electronic voting and conducting elections in one day, Nigeria can take a significant step towards a more efficient, corruption-free, and inclusive political process. This approach will not only reduce costs but also increase the credibility of elections, ensuring that the voices of all Nigerians are heard.
