North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reportedly ordered the execution of up to 30 government officials in connection with their handling of recent floods and landslides that resulted in significant loss of life.
According to reports, Kim held the officials responsible for the “unacceptable” number of deaths, estimated to be around 1,000, and demanded severe punishment.
The executions, which took place in late August, were reportedly carried out on charges of corruption and dereliction of duty.
While the identities of the officials remain unknown, North Korean state media confirmed that a high-ranking provincial leader, Kang Bong-hoon, was dismissed from his position.
Kim Jong Un had previously visited areas affected by the floods, acknowledging the extensive damage and stating that reconstruction efforts could take several months. The government also provided shelter for displaced individuals, including vulnerable groups, in Pyongyang.
Despite these efforts, Kim Jong Un has denied reports of a high death toll, accusing South Korea of spreading “false rumors” to damage North Korea’s reputation.
The frequency of public executions in North Korea has reportedly increased significantly since the COVID-19 pandemic, with officials facing intense scrutiny and fear for their positions and lives.”
