The Bola Tinubu administration has faced criticism for its extravagant expenditures, including the purchase of a new presidential jet, a yacht, and other luxury items. Despite the country’s economic challenges and high inflation rate, the government has allocated billions of naira for these lavish purchases.
The new presidential jet, an Airbus A330, cost over $100 million, replacing the 19-year-old Boeing B737-700. The government secured approval for the purchase, but many Nigerians have expressed outrage, calling it insensitive.
Additionally, the administration proposed N5 billion for a presidential yacht in the 2023 supplementary budget, which was later diverted due to public backlash. However, sources suggest the yacht has already arrived in the country.
Other controversial expenses include:
- N21 billion spent on completing the Vice President’s official residence
- N160 million per unit for luxurious cars for National Assembly members
- N90 billion subsidy for the 2024 Hajj pilgrimage, now under investigation by anti-graft agencies
- N1.5 billion for vehicles for the Office of the First Lady
These lavish expenditures have sparked widespread criticism, with many calling for the government to prioritize the country’s economic challenges and the welfare of its citizens.
