President Bola Tinubu received a delegation from The Patriots, a group of eminent Nigerians, led by Chief Emeka Anyaoku, at the State House on Friday. The President assured the group that their request to convene a national constituent assembly to draft a new constitution would be reviewed.
The Patriots presented a two-pronged request: the convening of a national constituent assembly to produce a draft people’s democratic constitution, and legislation for a national plebiscite to ratify the draft constitution.
President Tinubu expressed his respect for the group and their contributions to national discourse, acknowledging the longstanding clamour for constitutional reforms. He noted that economic reform is his current priority but promised to consider constitutional review and other options soon.
The President also paid tribute to the founding chairman of The Patriots, Chief Rotimi Williams, and Professor Ben Nwabueze, describing them as strong believers in Nigeria.
Chief Anyaoku expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s ability to lead the constitutional transformation, citing his personal record as a champion of Nigeria’s struggle for democracy.
The meeting ended with an assurance from the President to invite the group for a more detailed conversation on their submissions.
