The Coalition of Aba North Ethnic Youth Groups has asked Abia State House of Assembly Speaker Emmanuel Emereuwa to declare the seat vacant in seven days.
The Aba North seat has been controversial since November 27, 2023, when the Lagos Court of Appeal removed Destiny Nwagwu of LP and proclaimed Aaron Uzodike of the PDP the legitimately elected representative.
Despite his repeated requests, the Speaker has not inaugurated PDP candidate Uzodike since November 2023.
On Friday, the Coalition of Aba North Ethnic Youth Groups demanded that the Speaker proclaim the seat vacant within seven days or face a citywide protest.
In a complaint letter, group head Uka Matthew and other Aba members said they have been without a representative in the Abia State House of Assembly for six months and cannot continue to be voiceless.
The Coalition claimed that Destiny Nwagwu of LP won the March 18, 2024, House of Assembly election, not Aaron Uzodike of the PDP, who won his Appeal court case.
Ukah Mathew vowed to protest in Aba if the Abia Speaker fails to declare the Aba North seat vacant.
“We urge our brother the Speaker to declare the ABA North State constituency seat vacant so INEC can hold a new election. Our leader, Uka Matthew, stated we voted for Destiny Nwagwu and cannot allow Aaron, who lost even in his voting unit, to represent us.
Last month, a group of traditional rulers from Aba North asked the Speaker to declare the seat vacant, claiming PDP candidate Aaron Uzodike was ill.
However, in April, Uzodike told journalists in Umuahia that he was healthy, sound, and ready to represent his people if sworn in, calling the traditional rulers who made the call imposters from other constituencies.
