The Lagos State Government is poised to sanction Uber Technologies System Nigeria Ltd. for failing to comply with essential data sharing agreements, according to a statement by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, released on Friday.
Expressing deep concern over Uber’s persistent defiance of established regulations, particularly regarding critical Application Programme Interface (API) integration for enhanced safety and security, Mr. Osiyemi underscored the government’s unwavering commitment to the safety and security of its residents.
The commissioner emphasized that the failure to comply with API integration requirements constitutes a significant violation despite ongoing efforts to maintain a secure and regulated transportation environment in Lagos State.
API integration plays a crucial role in enabling real-time data sharing for government monitoring and accountability during active trips, a necessity for fostering a secure and regulated transportation ecosystem for the well-being of all Lagos State residents.
Highlighting the urgency of the situation, Mr. Osiyemi called on Uber to swiftly seek resolution within the established regulatory framework, emphasizing that immediate corrective action is imperative to rectify the company’s non-compliance with the Data Sharing Agreement and API integration requirements of the state.
Non-compliance with the regulations, Mr. Osiyemi warned, would result in stern sanctions in strict accordance with state laws and regulations, affecting both Uber’s operations and its users. Therefore, Uber users are advised to exercise caution in light of the impending sanctions.
