Governor Makinde of Oyo State has issued a stern ultimatum to roadside traders, directing them to vacate their illegally erected kiosks, containers, shanties, and other structures within seven days or face sanctions. The directive, aimed at addressing unwarranted obstruction of road traffic, was announced by Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola during an inspection tour of the Ojoo area in Ibadan.
Mogbonjubola emphasized that the presence of illegal occupants on the roadsides was causing significant disruption to traffic flow. He cited violations of the state’s Environmental Sanitation Regulation of 2013 and labeled their operations as an environmental nuisance.
Highlighting the need for immediate action, Mogbonjubola stressed that relocating these roadside businesses to more suitable locations in neighborhood markets would mitigate road accidents and prevent loss of lives and property. The ultimatum serves as a proactive measure to safeguard public safety and ensure smooth traffic flow across Oyo State.
The Commissioner urged roadside traders to comply with the directive within the stipulated timeframe to avoid facing sanctions imposed by the state government. Failure to adhere to the ultimatum could result in legal consequences as the government remains committed to enforcing regulations that uphold environmental standards and ensure the well-being of residents.
In addition to addressing the immediate concerns of road obstruction, the government’s action aims to promote organized urban development and enhance the overall aesthetics of the state. By relocating roadside businesses to designated market areas, the government seeks to create a conducive environment for both traders and residents while reducing the risk of accidents and congestion on major roadways.
