Yusuf Mustapha, a 42-year-old transporter, has been sentenced to five years’ imprisonment by Justice Udofot Akpan of the Ibadan Division of the Federal High Court for unlawful possession of 2.12kg of hemp. Mustapha pleaded guilty to the charge of unlawful dealing in illicit substances, leading to his conviction.
Justice Akpan affirmed the conviction, stating that the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) had satisfactorily proven its case beyond reasonable doubt. Mustapha was initially arraigned on a count charge related to illegal dealing with narcotic substances.
According to NDLEA counsel O.O. Olusola, Mustapha was apprehended on January 24 along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. The evidence presented during the trial supported the prosecution’s case, leading to Mustapha’s conviction.
Considering Mustapha’s plea for leniency and his status as a first-time offender, Justice Akpan opted to reduce the sentence from the maximum possible. However, he emphasized the severity of the offense and warned Mustapha against future involvement in illicit drug dealing, highlighting the potential consequences of repeat offenses.
In delivering the verdict, Justice Akpan imposed a five-year jail term on Mustapha, aiming to deter others from engaging in similar illegal activities. The sentencing serves as a stern reminder of the legal consequences associated with unlawful possession and trafficking of narcotics in Nigeria.
This case underscores the commitment of the judiciary and law enforcement agencies, particularly the NDLEA, in combating drug-related crimes and upholding the rule of law. It also sends a clear message that individuals involved in drug trafficking will face prosecution and appropriate penalties under the law.
As Nigeria continues its efforts to curb drug abuse and trafficking, strict enforcement of relevant laws and imposition of deterrent punishments remain vital strategies in ensuring public safety and combating the menace of narcotics in society.
