The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reported that vandals have destroyed its 330 kV Gwagwalada-Katampe Transmission Line, leading to a reduction of 250 MW in power supply flexibility and volume into Abuja. The incident occurred on Monday night at approximately 11:32 p.m.
According to TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the destruction occurred when tower 70 on the transmission line collapsed due to the destruction of its four tower footings. This caused the tower to fall to the ground, supported only by the conductors.
In response to the incident, TCN has mobilized its team to the site and commenced emergency repairs to the damaged tower and associated equipment. The disruption in the transmission line has impacted the power supply to Abuja, underscoring the critical need for swift repair and restoration efforts.
This is not the first time TCN has faced vandalism-related challenges. On December 11, 2023, the Gwagwalada-Kukwaba-Apo 132KV Transmission Line 1 was vandalized between Towers 23 and Tower 25, further highlighting the persistent threat posed by vandals to Nigeria’s power infrastructure.
Vandalism of transmission lines not only disrupts power supply but also poses significant safety risks to the surrounding areas. TCN emphasized the importance of vigilance and security measures to protect critical infrastructure from such incidents in the future.
The company urged members of the public to report any suspicious activities or individuals observed near transmission lines or substations to relevant authorities promptly. Additionally, TCN reiterated its commitment to ensuring the integrity and reliability of Nigeria’s power transmission network despite the challenges posed by vandalism and sabotage.
Efforts to repair and restore the Gwagwalada-Katampe Transmission Line are underway, with TCN working diligently to minimize the impact of the disruption on power supply to Abuja and surrounding areas.
