President Tinubu is being urged by Ohanaeze Ndigbo to drop the charges of treason against Nnamdi Kanu, saying that this was done for Omoyere Sowore and Igboho.
In light of the recent admirable decision to drop the treasonable felony charge against Yoruba activist Omoyere Sowore, OHANAEZE NDIGBO takes a firm and uncompromising stand and urgently appeals to President Tinubu to show integrity and justice by dropping the terrorism charges against IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu. Bold and decisive leadership is needed at this crucial juncture to guide Nigeria towards genuine healing and unity.
The highest Igbo socio-cultural organisation praises the Federal Government’s ruling in the Sowore case, highlighting the necessity of legal equality. Justice must be done fairly and equally, and we demand without wavering that Nnamdi Kanu receive the same treatment as soon as possible. Justice must be applied without regard to political or ethnic affiliations.
Nigerians, especially the Ndigbo community, fervently beseech President Tinubu to direct the Attorney General of the Federation to halt Kanu’s trial and drop all charges against him, citing legal precedents seen in the Sowore case, ahead of Monday, February 26, 2024, the Federal Government’s resumption date for the trial against IPOB leader. In a democratic society, consistency and equality before the law are unavoidable; any divergence weakens the foundation of justice and equity.
Taking into account the political context, OHANAEZE NDIGBO says that Nnamdi Kanu’s release is more than just legality—rather, it’s a moral obligation and a critical first step in making up for historical wrongs. In addition to putting an end to a contentious chapter, the prompt dismissal of Kanu’s accusations will open the door for harmony and peace in the Southeast.
Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the secretary general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, states that the group is steadfast in its determination to employ every tool at its disposal to promote Kanu’s freedom, emphasising the pressing need to make amends and rebuild trust in the legal system. A selective application of the law leads to conflict and alienation, thus President Tinubu must advocate for equity and fairness in the execution of justice.
OHANAEZE NDIGBO is unwavering in its belief that Nnamdi Kanu’s liberation marked a turning point in Nigeria’s development into a more equitable and cohesive country. The Nigerian people would be greatly impacted by President Tinubu’s decision on this issue, which signals a commitment to preserving the rule of law and promoting an atmosphere of inclusivity and harmony.
