The Department of State Services (DSS) has cautioned against planned protests by sections of the organized labor on 27th and 28th February 2024, citing potential for heightened tensions and violence. While acknowledging the legitimate rights of the labor movement, the DSS urges dialogue and negotiation over protests to maintain peace and public order.
Highlighting the government’s efforts to address economic challenges, the DSS calls for citizens to trust in ongoing initiatives rather than resorting to protests that could exacerbate socio-economic issues. Citing the poem “The Casualties” by JP Clark, the DSS emphasizes the risks of escalated conflicts and calls for unity to avoid catastrophic repercussions.

Parents, guardians, and various sectors are urged to discourage activities that could jeopardize public safety, while political parties and civil society are called upon to demonstrate leadership and eschew violence. The DSS warns against exploitation by fifth columnists and hostile forces to destabilize national peace and emphasizes opposition to violence as a means of addressing challenges.
The statement, issued by Peter Afunanya, Director of PR & Strategic Communications at the DSS, reaffirms the agency’s commitment to maintaining peace and collaborating with law enforcement agencies to ensure national stability.
