The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced its readiness for the rescheduled Enugu South Urban State Constituency rerun election slated for Wednesday, February 14. Rex Achumie, INEC’s head of voter education and publicity department, assured journalists in Enugu of adequate preparations for the exercise.
Achumie disclosed that the commission would receive sensitive materials from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in the presence of political parties and electoral stakeholders by 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday. These materials will be stored at the state INEC Headquarters in Enugu and distributed before 8:00 a.m. on polling day.
He addressed concerns raised from the previous postponement, assuring that measures had been taken to ensure the availability of result sheets and prevent mistakes. The rerun was initially scheduled for February 3 but was postponed due to the absence of result sheets at polling units.
Achumie emphasized effective monitoring and supervision, with top management staff deployed to oversee the smooth conduct of the election. He urged voters in the eight polling units in the Uwani axis of Enugu metropolis to turn out in large numbers to cast their votes.
The rerun election will see Emeka Ngene of the LP and his PDP opponent, Sam Ngene, competing for the 4,618 votes in Ward 5. Although the PDP’s Mr. Ngene was declared the winner in the March 18, 2023 election with 5,862 votes, the Court of Appeal ordered a rerun due to irregularities.
