An explosion near the Bureau of Public Enterprise buildings in Maitama, Abuja, has left at least two people injured, according to the Federal Capital Territory Police Command.
A loud sound that appeared to indicate an explosion earlier had the area in a state of apprehension
The event happened as garbage evacuators were lighting fire to wastes in the area, according to a statement made public by SP Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer for the territory.
She stated that in reaction to the explosion, personnel of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit and a fast response team were dispatched to evaluate the situation.
According to the PPRO, preliminary findings indicate that two of the rubbish evacuators were injured when an overheated metal waste container detonated due to extreme heat.
She stated that Maitama General Hospital is currently providing medical care to the patients.
The people are urged by the FCT Police Command to use caution and not to utilise metal trash cans.
“We advise using plastic or rubber containers instead of overheated metal refuse containers for waste disposal, as they present a lower risk of incidents involving those containers,” the statement continued.
