Kwara State Governor Affirms Support for Judiciary at 2024 Legal Year Commencement

Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, reiterated his commitment to supporting the judiciary during the commencement ceremony of the 2024 Legal Year. The governor pledged continued assistance in infrastructural development and welfare, acknowledging the judiciary’s dedication to dispensing justice.

Governor AbdulRazaq highlighted ongoing efforts, including the rehabilitation of courtrooms, which will persist within budgetary limits in the new year. He expressed the administration’s dedication to sustaining the rule of law, public order, and safety, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with the judiciary.

Commending the judiciary’s steadfastness in justice delivery, the governor assured the legal community of sustained support. The state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Senior Ibrahim Sulayman, emphasized the administration’s unwavering commitment to the rule of law as fundamental to justice.

Chief Judge of the state, Justice Abiodun Adebara, lauded Governor AbdulRazaq for investments in court infrastructure, staff welfare, and manpower strengthening. The governor’s approval for the appointment of High Court judges was acknowledged as a significant step, potentially bringing the total number of judges to 24, an unprecedented figure in the state’s history.

Justice Adebara disclosed that 26,533 cases were registered in the 2022/2023 legal year, with 13,720 decided and 12,813 pending at the beginning of the current legal year. He commended the bar and the bench for their commitment to improving the justice system.

Highlighting the financial aspect, the chief judge revealed that N83,674,936.86 was generated from criminal and civil cases, along with probate fees, in the last legal year.

The event, attended by members of the bar and the bench, including serving and retired appeal court justices, retired chief judges, and serving and retired judges, marked a significant moment for the legal community in Kwara State.

Governor Abdulrazaq’s affirmation of support signals a collaborative effort to enhance the justice sector, focusing on infrastructure, welfare, and efficiency in legal proceedings.
