Chief Edwin Clark, the head of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), has claimed that the attempt to remove Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State is being orchestrated by Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
According to Clark, Wike wants the Speaker of the House of Assembly to take Fubara’s post after his impeachment.
Edison Ehie, the majority leader and a staunch supporter of Fubara, was ousted by the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Ehie was dismissed for reportedly impeding a Monday attempt to file for the governor’s impeachment.
Clark, nevertheless, cautioned against trying to remove the governor from office.
The PANDEF leader, who signed the declaration, added that all Rivers people, who have endured enough political upheavals, should uphold the principles of constitutional democracy.
“I have been greatly disturbed by the reported developments in Rivers State in the last 24 hours,” the statement said in part.
“I have received credible information that there is an attempt to forcibly remove Rivers State Governor His Excellency Siminalaye Fubara, who has just been in office for roughly five months.
“I am aware that Mr. Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and the former governor of Rivers State, is behind this depressing incident.
“And that the goal is to unseat the current governor, compel Professor Ngozi Odu, his deputy, to step down, and install the Speaker of the House of Assembly—another Ikwerre—as the new governor.”
