Nigeria’s internationally acclaimed poet, Chimamanda Adichie recently took the world stage by surprise with her petition letter to the President of the United States Joe Biden. Adichie’s letter focused on the February 25, 2023 Presidential election in the country. In her well articulated letter, she indicted the election as faulty, and concluded categorically that the election was hallow and not credible. Obviously, her letter came as a rude shock, no one expected such a new dimension to surface in the already controversial election. And as it were, the APC chieftains, especially the spokespersons did not find it funny.
In their hasty and sporadic reactions, they descended heavily on the erudite scholar, calling her unprintable names. In utter confusion they resorted to using gutter languages, outright abuse and tried to dampen her patriotic display.
But why would they be so visibly angry ? Why would they be so pugnacious, loquacious, bombastic, and lost balance over a letter that could be settled on literary level. Unfortunately for them, their uncultured reaction only got the young lady bolder, far more audacious and resolute to defend her stand on the election. They deflected from what is really important or at stake punching the air without impact.
Most of them take their positions as an opportunity to be reckless, abusive, vituperative, disrespectful, and braggadocious. If that is what it takes to be a spokesperson, for sure, my little dog, “MACE” would do much better than Festus Keyamo, and Femi Fani-Kayode.
A spokesperson is one whose job is to conceptualize and manage publicity for a company, a brand, or public figure. He makes statements on behalf of his principal in a manner that would further enhance his reputation and corporate image.
But today, all we have around are self centered driven individuals who don’t even know their onions in the business of image making.
One would have expected them to engage the young lady intellectually based on the electoral issues as raised in her letter. But unfortunately, they threw caution to the wind and danced naked because they are obviously bereft of ideas, no focus, no vision. If at all they have any, it is only how to satisfy their stomachs. Not one of them really cares for the wellbeing of Nigeria, their sense of judgement is beclouded by their vested interest of what they could aggrandize and harness for themselves and families. It is a pathetic situation for our nation. What a shame.
