Press Statement: 9th June, 2020
The leadership of Okon-Aku Development Union (ODU), Ohafia, the umbrella development body of the Ohafia autonomous community, has come out to condemn and reject the activities of some scrupulous elements who are bent on denting the good image of the community with illegality, saying that Okon-Aku disassociates self from these men of the underworld.
This was contained in a Statement signed by the ODU President General, Dr. Nmecha Umeh Kalu, and made available to the OHAFIA-TV News on Tuesday, 9th June 2020, following an unfortunate incident of the previous day.
In his words, “ODU condemns all forms of brutality, ritual killings, kidnapping, child trafficking, trado-medical falsehood, and its related practices, and we are committed to fighting them to a standstill as we cannot stand aside and watch as few scrupulous elements among us drag the name of our community in the mud with their illegal activities.
“The Union condemns in its entirety, the recent incident last weekend, where two trado-medical practitioners attempted to shoot and kill their client, an action that is inimical to humanity.
“For the people of Okon-Aku who have never at any point in time condoned any evil, the Community itself, couldn’t accept their nefarious activities and wicked actions and were ready to lynch then but for the quick intervention of the Union President, who invited men of the Mobile Police force and handed them over.
“The matter is now under investigation and the culprits will be punished according to the rule of law as we do not encourage jungle justice, neither do we harbor wicked and evil men amongst us.
” Let me further reiterate that henceforth, a state of emergency has been declared on the activities of every illegal citizen of Okon-Aku. This also goes to cultism, trado-medical falsehood, communal clash and any form of negative actions as we are focused on exploiting only those activities that will help the development of Okon-Aku and nothing less” he warned.
The President thanked the men of the Nigeria Police Force for the quick response that averted the action of the community that would’ve made them take laws into their hands.
“I appreciate the quick intervention of the men of the Mobile Unit of the Nigerian Police Force who now have the culprits in their custody to dispense punishment after investigation.
“I assure the Police that we will continue to work with the law to rid our community of those bent on bringing dent to the good name of Okon-Aku Autonomous Community as no people can progress by condoning evil” he concluded.
